Enhancing Skills
for Eldercare
| With the number of elderly
people rising substantially, many have health problems which make
it impossible for them to care for themselves. That is why it is so
important that health care professionals continually update their
skills of examining the basic needs of the elderly, the challenges
they face, and how these changes affect their functioning. |

A day long
training was held for persons working with elderly persons. Forty-two
persons from Pike, Monroe, and Northampton counties attended the workshop
Enhancing Skills for Eldercare. Workshop speakers addressed: Understanding
Memory Disorders - Kelly OShea Carney, Ph.D., Eldercare Assessment
and Resources; Intergenerational Programs: Planning Principles and
Program Possibilities - Dr. Matt Kaplan, Associate Professor, Intergenerational
Programs and Aging, Penn State University; and Music Therapy: Harmonizing
the Emotions - Sister Mariam Pfeifer, Director of Music Therapy, Marywood
University. |
| Forty-four
people attended the day long training. A thumbnail sketch of the evaluations
showed that (n=31): As a result of attending this workshop, 97% of
the participants learned useful information about how memory works;
81% thought their awareness of how intergenerational strategies strengthen
communities was raised, while the same percentage indicated the presentation
increased their understanding of the range of intergenerational program
possibilities; 87% felt they gained new knowledge about music therapy;
64% felt they were very likely to pass on the information to family,
friends and staff, while 32% thought they were likely to. |
