Food and Crafts for Profit

Home based businesses continue to spring up throughout the United States. In an effort to provide area entrepreneurs with skills related to pricing products, zoning issues, finding their niche, governmental rules and regulations, as well as targeting their market, a workshop was designed to focus on these issues. While home food production had been targeted in the past this workshop included the ever increasing home craft market.
The post workshop evaluations reflected the largest change was in the area of the Department of Agriculture licensing regulations (68% increase), followed by how to price a product (61%), marketing strategies (58%), zoning issues (57%), finding a niche for a particular product (48%), and financial management (42%).

Additionally, participants noted they had learned the importance of having a plan as well as the importance of keeping their business and personal accounts separate. They also indicated they had learned that homeowner insurance is usually not enough to cover the home business and that they need to focus on one specific product or service in order to be successful.

Comments gathered from the session included “I learned so much,” “The workshop was very detailed, easy to follow, and comprehensive,” and “The workshop opened my eyes to the regulations, start-up costs, and potential profits.”
