Agricultural Profitability and Sustainability

The dairy industry is undergoing profound and rapid changes. To survive the future, today’s dairy producers must adapt and cope with many new challenges.

To assist a local Greentown dairy farmer, Agricultural Engineering Agent , Patrick Richie of Columbia County and Ed Pruss, Agriculture and Dairy Agent in Wayne County, were asked to visit the site. While there, they looked at the pros and cons of putting a new free stall barn behind the current tie stall barn. It was determined this would work well and additionally it would be feasible to use the current push off as an alleyway for scraping the manure to the pit. It was also determined that the facility would be close enough to the tie stall barn to allow for ease of switching animals back and forth between the barns. Handouts were also left that included plans for a four-row free stall barn and plans for dry cow barns.
