Introduction

Dear
Tween Topics Reader,
Having
a tween in your home can be the ultimate Survivor Challenge!
While
you won't go as far as voting a tween out of your family, you need to
know the most you can about this stage of life for your family to function
without too much friction, tension and stress. By knowing more about tweens
you can be there to celebrate their enthusiasm and to console them when
they need comforting.
Who or
what is a tween? A tween is a child who is too old to be playing with
a Tonka truck but too young to drive! They are too old for a babysitter,
yet perhaps too young to babysit! They pretend not to know you one second
and then want a bear hug the next! But, being a tween today is nothing
like being a tween 10-20 years ago. Tweens today are at a crossroads in
their lives where they are being pulled in so many directions.
And while
many parents anticipate the worst during the adolescent years, as with
any stage of life, your job as a parent can be made easier if you have
information on how to best deal with the specific challenges that pop
up.
Tween
Topics
is meant to help you in this journey to new adventure. Please take the
time to read it carefully and feel free to contact any of the Penn State
Cooperative Extension offices listed below for additional information
or assistance if you need it.
Sincerely,
Penn
