Clubs

Animal Club - this club meets at the Pike County Administration Building. The next meeting will be Feb. 3, from 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM.

Multi County Teen Council Meeting – The next Teen Council Meeting is scheduled for Feb. 12, from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at the Monroe County Extension Office (Stroudsburg). Transportation is available, however, limited.

We’re Together in 2002 meets in the Greeley Area.

Pumpkin Patch Kids meets in the Bushkill area. The next meeting will be held Feb. 10, from 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM at the Smith house

***NEW*** Community Counts is a new 4-H club forming in the Milford Area. This club will hold their first meeting Thursday, January 30, from 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM at the United Methodist Church in Milford (East Ann Street). This club's main focus will be community service projects. If you like to have fun, meet new people and want to make a difference in your community, then this is the club for you.

Rough Riders Horse Club meets at the Pocono Ranch Land stables.

** Special Up-Coming Events:

Camp Shehaqua 2003 – Mark your calendars! Our camp week is scheduled for June 30 – July 3.

2003 Camp Counselor Applications are now being accepted. If you are 14 years or older (as of Jan. 1, 2003) and would like to be a camp counselor in training or a camp counselor at Camp Shehaqua, contact the Extension Office.


 

4-H Day with the Lady Lions – You are invited to participate in the 4-H day with the Lady Lions on Sunday, March 2, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College. The Lady Lions will be hosting the Badgers from Wisconsin. Tickets will be free to all Pike County 4-H members, leaders, and family members. To order tickets, please call the Pike County Extension Office at 570-296-3400 by Friday, January 31, 2003.

Local Government Day – is being held Friday, March 14, at the Penn State Worthington Scranton Campus from 9 AM – 3 PM. Through role play and discussion, teens will learn more about how our government works. This year’s topic will be “PA School Funding: Property Tax Reform.” Interested individuals must be 13 yrs old (as of Jan 1/03) – 18 yrs old. Lunch and transportation will be provided. Registration is limited. Please call the Extension Office for more information or to register.

4-H Stipend - Three, $250 Stipends will be offered each year. You are eligible to apply for the 4-H Stipend if you are a Pike County 4-H member or alumnus (17 – 25 years of age by January 1st) each calendar year. Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time post high school course of study, which lasts at least one school calendar year. There will be no preferential treatment for type of study. If you would like an application and a copy of the eligibility guidelines, please contact the Extension Office. Completed applications are due on or before March 31. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by June 1.

4-H Capital Days – This event is held May 12 – 13, in Harrisburg, PA. This event is open to 4-H’ers who are 15 years or older as of Jan. 1/03. Learn about government by visiting state agencies, participating in a simulation activity and meeting with and talking to legislators. Pike County can send two delegates (1 male & 1 female). If you would like to be considered to represent Pike County, please contact the Extension Office.

Fearless Leaders

PA State 4-H Horse Forum is intended for 4-H volunteer leaders and 4-H teens (14 years of age and over).

The Forum is being held March 7 – 9, at the Days Inn at Penn State. Workshops include: Program Updates, Ethics, Veterinary Science, Teaching Kids, Preparing for Horse Bowl and Hippology, and much, much, more.

Full and part time registration options are available. Pike County will pay the registration for their attendees (you must be a current 4-H leader, volunteer or teen). Hotel accommodations, meals (not included in the program) and travel expenses, are the responsibility of the participants. The hotel fee is $75.00 plus tax for single, double, triple and quad occupancy. Hotel reservations at the Days Inn Penn State must be made by Feb. 7. (Please indicate that you are attending the PA State 4-H Horse Forum.) The Forum registration deadline is February 21. Please contact the Pike County Extension Office for more information or to register.

Northeast States Leaders Forum Planning Committee Meeting (NELF) – Pike County is looking for interested individuals to serve on the NELF planning committee. It is PA’s responsibility to host the 2004 Leaders Forum. The Forum will take place in Lancaster. It is up to each region to provide one aspect of the forum. The Northeast Region is responsible for the auction and entertainment. Your assistance is needed to make this event a success. If you would be interested in serving on the planning committee, please contact the extension office.

2003 Pennsylvania 4-H Shooting Sports Training – is being held March 28–30, 2003, at Camp Susque, Trout Run, PA (Lycoming Co.). This program offers advanced training in the rifle and shotgun disciplines and an introduction to the National 4-H hunting curriculum. The registration fee is $100 for 4-H Agents & Leaders (this includes meals/lodging/and training materials) and $130 for shotgun. If you are interested in attending, please contact the extension office. Registration is limited. The deadline to register is February 21.

New Enrollment Forms are required. If you have not already done so, please have your club members fill out new enrollment and photo release forms and then submit them to the Extension Office. Thank you.

Making the Grade


WANTED!!!! Classrooms to pilot NEW Food Business project.
The Pike County 4-H is looking for a middle school class to pilot Food Business. Food Business is a 4-H project that assists middle school youth in learning about the food business and the multitude of careers that exist within it. Beginning within a supermarket, the project explores the food business that includes the growing of food, its processing and journey to the local supermarket, and the business operations that market, distribute and sell food products. The project creates an avenue to stimulate youth to consider jobs or careers in the food business. For more information or to pilot this program in your class, please contact the Pike County Extension Office at (570) 296-3400. 


School Enrichment Programs – Teachers, please call the 4-H Coordinator to find out how 4-H can supplement or fulfill your curriculum requirements. Some examples of school enrichment programs: Mini Society, Financial Champions, Rocketry, Embryology, Entomology, Wildlife, Forestry, and much more. Call today to find out about grade level appropriateness, content and/or how you can sign up for a school enrichment program. You’ll be glad you did.

“Chick Chatter” with Dr. Phillip Clauer. The Lackawanna County Cooperative Extension Office is hosting an embryology training on Thursday, February 27, 2003, from 5:30 – 8:30 PM.

This three hour session will be presented by Dr. Phillip Clauer, Senior Extension Associate, from Penn State Main Campus. Dr. Clauer will review incubator management, egg formation, embryo development, chick hatching, and disease control. The Embryology project is a great hands-on school enrichment project. If you’ve done this project before or are thinking about conducting it in your classroom, you won’t want to miss this training.

The training is scheduled to be held at the Lackawanna Heritage Valley Center. Registration is required and the deadline to register is February 6. Teachers in Pike County can register by calling the Pike County Cooperative Extension Office at (570) 296-3400.
