4-H/Youth Development Program

Dear Educator,

Budgets are tight and time is always scarce..but you want to provide your students with hands-on learning experiences. Pike County Cooperative Extension 4-H/Youth Development Programs can help you with this dilemma.

The Extension 4-H/Youth Development Program offers hands-on learning experiences in a variety of subject areas. These programs are available at little or no cost to groups and organizations in Pike County, Pennsylvania. If you are from another area, contact your local Cooperative Extension office. Most programs require little planning on the teacher’s part...it’s all been done for you!

Please take a few moments to review the highlighted programs in this pamphlet, they have shown to be especially popular with teachers and students. If you would like to register for a program, simply fill out a request form (click here to access the request form) and mail it to: Penn State Cooperative Extension Office, 514 Broad St., Milford, PA, 18337 or e-mail it to PikeExt@psu.edu.

More projects are available through the 4-H program and are suitable for classroom use; they may also be used in a club or activity setting. What is Penn State Cooperative Extension?

For more than 80 years, Pennsylvanians have relied on Penn State Cooperative Extension for up-to-date information and new ways to solve individual and community problems. Extension programs are funded cooperatively by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and state and county governments.

What is 4-H?

4-H is a youth education program of Penn State Cooperative Extension. It is a non formal education program for youth between the ages of 8 - 19. 4-H helps youth develop life skills through a variety of projects.

4-H projects are presented through different delivery methods, including community clubs, individual study, special interest groups, camps and school enrichment programs.

2005 - 2006

KIDS & KASH

KIDS & KASH is a four issue consumer education newsletter which can be used in the classroom or at home. KIDS & KASH will help students learn the factors affecting a purchase decision, understand the process of making a consumer complaint, distinguish between wants and needs and recognize the influence of advertising on purchase decisions.

Grade level: 4 - 7

Cost: $20 / classroom

CATCH THE BUG

Students will learn parts of an insect, insect identification, how to collect insects and how insects affect our lives.

Grade Level: 2 - 12

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Catch the Bug leader’s guide and student project books.


FOOD, LAND AND PEOPLE

FOOD, LAND AND PEOPLE is a curriculum of agricultural literacy. FOOD, LAND AND PEOPLE includes 40 teaching units on topics from insects to farm animals, plants to composting, environment to population growth, food and fiber production to global connections, consumer behavior to public policy and many more.

Grade levels: pre-K - 12

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Topic of interest worksheets, handouts and visuals.

4-H WORKFORCE PREPARATION PROGRAMS:

Wild Over Work “WOW” focuses on skills that children need to develop today in order to succeed in the work world in the future.

My Future Is What I Make It – The world of work is a complicated jigsaw puzzle that challenges youth as they make important decisions about their future. “My Future Is What I Make It” helps youth explore their career options.

Get Ready, Get Set, Get a Job - Getting a job in today’s work world requires more than desire. It takes skills. This project helps participants develop the skill of selling yourself to an employer. “Get Ready, Get Set, Get a Job” helps participants learn how to fill out an employment application and interview successfully.

Grade level: 1 – 12

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Program leader’s guide and student project books.

FROM EGG TO CHICK

By using an incubator, managing the incubation process and hatching chicks, children will learn the parts of an egg, how an embryo develops and how to care for newly hatched chicks.

Grade level: 2 - 6

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Leader’s guide, student manuals, incubator and slide set or videotape. **Can provide you with sources for fertilized eggs.


GEE WHIZ IN AGRICULTURE

The GEE WHIZ IN AGRICULTURE video series introduces students to the many scientific fields and math skills used in the nation’s largest industry, agriculture. Activity sheets accompany each video and include new words, discussion questions, classroom activities, experiments games and puzzles.

Grade level: 4 - 5

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Teacher’s guide, activity sheets and videos.

ROCKETS AWAY

This project explores the basics of rocketry through a variety of hands-on experiments. Members are also encouraged to apply what they learned through the design, construction and launching of rockets.

Grade level: 5 - 12

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Leader’s guide and student project guide. Compliment this program with a series of videotaped programs from NASA. Available from the Extension Office.


TALKING WITH TJ: CONFLICT RESOLUTION

This is a positive, even fun approach to the serious subject of conflict. The entertaining video stories and fun activities help you teach children some basic skills in three areas related to working out problems without violence: Keeping anger under control, respecting other people’s points of view and communicating effectively to resolve arguments.

Grade level: 2 - 5

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Leader’s guide, activity sheets and TALKING WITH TJ video.

WILDLIFE IS ALL AROUND US

WILDLIFE IS ALL AROUND US will introduce students to the major groups of wildlife, their basic requirements, and where they can be found. By working through the projects presented in these units, members will increase their awareness of the animals around them and the signs and clues they leave behind.

Grade level: 2 - 6

Cost: $20 / classroom

Program materials provided: Leader's guide and student project books.

ENDANGERED WILDLIFE

ENDANGERED WILDLIFE will give students a broad understanding of both the causes and the consequences of species extinction. It also encourages them to become aware of practices worldwide and in their own lives that affect the plants and animals around them.

Grade level: 7 – 12

Cost: $20 / classroom
